The 10th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing was stationed at RAF Alconbury from August 25th 1959 when it was assigned to the 3rd Airforce. The Wing was to stay at Alconbury until 1st November 1994, even though had been redesignated the 10th Tactical Fighter Wing from August 20th 1987.

The emblem is made blue and yellow for the Air Forces. The head of Argus, symbolic of the heavens, who oversees every movement on earth, is representative of the observation functions of the organisation.

The Wing was established to perform tactical reconnaissance which it undertook for the first period of its existence from 1947 - 1949. In July 1952 it replaced 117th TRW at Toul-Rosieres AB in France, providing weather reconnaissance. When re-assigned to the 3rd Air Force at RAF Alconbury (replacing 7560th Air Base Group), it undertook tactical reconnaissance (day and night, multi-sensor) until 1988.

In May 1976, it dropped two of its three Squadrons - 30th & 32nd TRS - and replaced them with the 527th Tactical Fighter Training Aggressor Squadron to provide "dissimilar" air combat training for USAFE fighter and reconnaissance wings in September 1976.
