Bill and Joe Beresford (their real names) are employees of British Waterways and London - Birmingham is their usual run. The main thread of the film is the story of one of their four and a half day journeys. The film compares conditions on this section of the canals with those elsewhere in the country, and the work done by the canal maintence services is outlined.
