Part 1: Straight Track - 49 minutes
Loose, uneven packing of ballast causes uncomfortable riding, and shortens track life. 'Measured packing' is the scientific way of making track firm and level by placing accurately calculated quantities of stone chippings under individual sleepers.
The film shows the special equipment used and demonstrates in detail the various steps necessary to deal with a section of straight track.

Part 2: Curved Track - 18 minutes
The additional factor of cant must be taken into account when applying measured packing to curved track. The film gives a quick recapitulation of measured packing on straight track, and then shows how cant is allowed for on curved track.
