The handling of goods which have to be transshipped several times during their road or rail journey has always presented a problem. The first stage in a programme of modernisation has been the introduction of 'palletisation' - the stacking together on simple platforms or pallets of all packages for the same destination, thus enabling small consignments to be combined into larger 'unit loads'. The film shows examples of mechanised handling which have saved warehouse space, speeded transit of goods and resulted in the more efficient use of manpower.
