
21) Here is a picture of such an engineering job actually in progress at Toton marshalling yards. It was necessary, in order to moderise the yard, to remove a hill fifty feet high, and to do this job the railway engineers used twelve mechanical excavators hauled by army tanks. You see one of them getting ready to go into action here. This excavator slices earth off the surface of the ground and dumps it in a box behind for clearing.
Though we dont often need to lay new railways, we do need to maintain those which have already been put down...
