27) Here’s a picture taken inside the railway locomotive works at Darlington, showing one little aspect of the work there – an operator holding a white-hot steel buckle which he will drop over the locomotive spring you can see below it. The chalk marks show where the buckle will be fixed. Then, when it cools, the metal will contract and bind those pieces of steel together in a grip which nothing will break.
