To operate the boiler:-
(1) Check by the gauge glass outside the locomotive that the water tank is full.
(2) Check that the isolating switches in each cab are ON, and the miniature circuit-breaker in the control cubicle is ON.
(3) Check that the water feed valve, between the feed pump and the control panel, is open.
(4) Check that the steam supply valve on top of the boiler, above and to the left of the pressure gauge, is closed.
(5) Check that both water level gauge cocks are open, and that the gauge blow-down cock is closed (all handles down).
(6) Check that the air pressure switch and the two pressure gauge cocks, all on top of the boiler above the control panel, are open and all other cocks closed.
(7) Open the air damper door in the ducting leading to the boiler.
(8) Open the fuel isolating valve.
(9) Press the Fluestat reset button on the back face of the Fluestat. which is mounted on the side of the flue chamber, facing the generator.
(10) Turn the boiler control switch to ON. If the lockout lamp is bright, press the reset button on the right-hand side of the control panel, and check that the lamp becomes dim. Note that if the low-water lamp is bright, the feed water pump starts up, and fills the boiler. When the low-water lamp goes dim, the burner motor and ignition magneto should start and the boiler ignite. Check that the magneto stops shortly after ignition. If the burner does not ignite, the lockout lamp will come up to full brilliance and the burner will shut down. Press the reset button and try again to start.
(11) Adjust the air damper door to give smokeless combustion.
(12) After the boiler has fired, when steam is issuing freely, close the air cock.
(13) Open the steam supply stop valve. Pressure will build up, and the boiler will operate automatically in accordance with the steam requirements, controlled by the Danfoss pressure switch. This switch is set for normal working: do not alter the adjustment.
(14) Once on each trip, pull the easing gear handle to check that the safety valve is free. Open the blow-down valve to check the operation of the low-water cut-out device.
(15) To shut down the boiler, turn the control switch to OFF.
(16) Before uncoupling the locomotive from a train, close the steam supply valve.
The boiler will shut down down automatically if the water is low, or if the burner flame blows out, or fails to ignite at the appropriate time.
When the diesel engine is not running, the boiler can be run from the battery with the fuel-transfer pump running in the TEST position. The battery must not be discharged to such an extent that the diesel engine cannot be restarted. When the locomotive is coupled to a train, do not leave the boiler working for more than 30 minutes with the engine stopped unless specifically instructed to do so.
